The main character from The Pilgrim’s Regress meets many interesting individuals, like Mr. Enlightenment and Mr. Sensible…both of which are neither!
After becoming a Christian Lewis’s first work of prose was released in 1933. It was his only allegory and sadly one of his least read books. In it we meet John, the central character, who travels a fascinating journey. Two of the key figures he runs into are Mr. Enlightenment and Mr. Sensible.
The first represents 19th century Rationalism. He tells John there is no Landlord (who represents God). When John meets Mr. Sensible, who symbolizes cultured worldliness and common sense, he encounters someone who favors comfort and pleasure over reason.
