Hobbit Interview Preview and Book Giveaway (Update)
September 20, 2012
UPDATED with details about giveaway contest beginning TODAY!
The first part of a movie version of The Hobbit is being released soon. Tomorrow (September 21st) is the 75th anniversary of the book being published and Saturday (22nd) is Hobbit Day 2012. So, what better thing to do than give a special preview of an interview I did with Devin Brown, author of The Christian World of The Hobbit. This book is being released next month.
As noted previously, C.S. Lewis had a connection to The Hobbit, so that’s why I’ve felt it fair game to discuss here. Below is a two minute preview of the interview. The complete interview will release on Saturday.
However, you can enter NOW for your chance to win one of five autographed copies of The Christian World of The Hobbit. NOTE: Contest limited to U.S. residents only.
All you have to do to put your name in for the random drawing is to post a comment below about what you like best about The Hobbit story. DEADLINE to enter is Sunday, September 23, 2012 by 6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

I love the Hobbit story for so many reasons. Not the least of which is the adventure tale aspect, where the character society would expect it from the least, sets out on a grand adventure, defying expectations as he goes!
What’s best about The Hobbit for me? The delightful whimsy of Tolkien’s writing—quite different than The LotR and certainly The Silmarillion, although I treasure them all. Also the many memorable characters that Tolkien develops are so endearing. Plus, how can one *not* fall in love with Bilbo Baggins, our first introduction to … Hobbits?!
My favorite part of The Hobbit is the pull Tolken continually presents between Bilbo’s “Took” side and his “Baggins” side. To me it is a brilliant and enjoyable way to show both the desire for exciting adventure and the desire for home and security that everybody feels.
How can one pick one favorite thing about The Hobbit?
I suppose it has to be when Thorin & company show up at Bilbo’s hobbit hole and set him all aflutter, taking over and treating him almost as a butler or some such.
Love it all, though — except the spiders in the forest.
