035 – Debating in Writing

C.S. Lewis was no stranger to debate, but did you know he encountered it at times when his essays were published?

In 1940 Lewis wrote an article entitled “Christianity and Culture” that was published in the March issue of the journal Theology.  Two months later S.L. Bethell and E.F. Carritt responded to what he said.

Then in June Lewis replied back, which lead to George Every joining in the discussion three month later. It all ended when Lewis closed out the year with his final reply in December. While the issue of the relationship between culture and Christianity can be complex, you can find the opinion Lewis held at the time in the essay collection Christian Reflections which was first published in 1967.

Do we have all those letters by any chance?

Great question about the replies to Lewis’ work. All were published in a journal simply called “Theology.” I don’t know of any place that has those letters/articles from the May and September 1940 issue. Possibly some seminary library would have that journal. In “Christian Reflections” we only have what Lewis wrote. I’ve send a message to my contact at The Wade Center and will post a follow-up.

Brilliant. I’m fundraising to visit the Wade in June, if they aren’t able to find anything.

I received a reply from Heidi Truty at The Wade Center and she said they have copies of the articles not published in “Christian Reflections.” She also noted that the Journal “Theology” is available in nearly 300 libraries in the U.S., including Wheaton College, so someone who went to another library with interlibrary loan service get photocopies of them that way (at whatever fee is charged). She also said The Wade Center takes those requests, too (and a fee is also involved). You can get some details about them at the following address, but I could locate specifics on fees, so you might have to call them:

I’ll see if I can pick these up in June when I go. I checked my too schools, Regent College and UPEI, and neither have it listed (I think). The problem is that there is another journal called just “Theology” and about 25 with “Theology” in the title. I’d love to see the whole collection.

Forgot to mention that she mentioned this about “Theology,” the journal is published by SPCK out of London. Don’t know if that helps.
