Most familiar with C.S. Lewis knows his mother died before he was ten, but do you know he “adopted” another mother?

After serving in World War I, Lewis did something unusual that many don’t understand. In 1920 he began to share a home with Janie King Moore and her daughter, Maureen. Why did he do this? My most accounts it came about because of a promise Lewis and his friend Paddy, Mrs. Moore’s son, had made while serving the war.

The two of them made a promise to each other that if one of them didn’t survive the war the other would look after the dead man’ family. Paddy was killed before the end of the war. By the time Lewis started to live with Mrs. Moore he had know her for several years. They shared a home until she died in 1951 and Lewis often referred to her socially as “mother.”
