r04 – Don’t Call Me “Clive”

November 21, 2012

Listen to as PODCAST: LMR004-No Clive Please

At an early age C.S. Lewis decided he didn’t like his first name…and believe me you wouldn’t want it either.

Imagine growing up with “Clive” as your first name. You might decide to use your middle name instead. But, wait, that’s no good, because your middle name is “Staples.” No wonder C.S. Lewis went for using his initials on the books he authored!

But, what did Lewis want others to call him? Would you believe around the age of four he announced he wanted to be called “Jacksie?” Though he stated he wouldn’t answer to any other name than this, it was eventually shortened to “Jacks,” which his brother and father often still called him. Ultimately the “s” was dropped and most friends simply knew him as “Jack.”
