Happy 60th Anniversary to Dawn Treader!
September 15, 2012
Sixty years ago today (9/15/1952) The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was released.
At the time it was the third published book in The Chronicles of Narnia, but since 1994 it has been numbered five (based on the order of the events occurring in Narnia). Whichever order you choose been the two, Eustace Scrubb is introduced for the first time among other colorful characters. Of course, he is an unwilling participate in the adventures at sea. One of the worse things that happen to Eustace is described in this passage:
He had turned into a dragon while he was asleep. Sleeping on a dragon’s hoard with greedy, dragonish thoughts in his heart, he had become a dragon himself.
Reepicheep is another character found in the Dawn Treader story. While first introduced in Prince Caspian (at least my name), his brave ways are further demonstrated on the high seas. While enemies with Eustace at start, by the end of Dawn Treader they eventually become companions.
There are, of course, too many interesting parts to the story, but one other aspect I’d like to mention is from part of a conversation Lucy has with Aslan:
“Oh, Aslan,” said she, “it was kind of you to come.”
“I have been here all the time,” said he, “but you have just made me visible.”
“Aslan!” said Lucy almost a little reproachfully. “Don’t make fun of me. As if anything 1 could do
would make you visible!”
“It did,” said Aslan. “Do you think I wouldn’t obey my own rules?”

It’s been 60 years since 1952!
Thanks for catching the error…I’ve made the correction.
I am sooo happy to see Eustace grow from a high-strung neurotic into ‘a real’ boy with a new heart and spirit, humbled but great for his time as the dragon, feelings and confessions galore, making friends for the first time…YAY Eustace!!!
